The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Lacrococcus lactis 1370
and Lactobacillus spp. V20 on plaque reduction. S. mutans was cultured with L. lactis
1370 and L. spp. V20 under 5% CO2, for 8 hours. Wet weight of plaque
adhered to orthodontic wire was measured. Test suspensions were prepared by growing
L. lactis 1370 and L. spp. V20 in milk under 5% CO2 for 24hours.
Thirty-eight young adults, 22 to 26 years of age , were volunteered to participate for
this study. All volunteers were received thorough oral prophylaxis, and suspended all
oral hygiene. Plaque scores were performed by Quigley and Hein Plaque Index after
disclosing all plaque except third molars. Baseline plaque scores were assessed at 6 and
24 hours. The panelists were randomly assigned to either L. lactis 1370 and L. spp. V20
mouth rinse. They rinsed immediately once after oral prophylaxis and twice after meals
(breakfast and lunch) with 20m1 of their respective test rinses(109
CFU/ml) for 2 minutes under supervision. Plaque scores were again assessed at 6 and
24 hours after the use of test rinses. The panelists were statistically analysed. In vitro
results were that L. lactis 1370 absolutely inhibited plaque formation, and L. spp. V20
half inhibited that. The results showed a PI reduction of 0.93¡¾0.29 and 0.97¡¾0.33 in L.
lactis 1370 group, and 0.05¡¾0.36 and 0.55¡¾0.36 in L. spp. V20 group after 6 and 24
hours, respectively. Plaque reductions were statistically significant(p<0.05) except 6 hours
after the use of L. spp. V20 suspension. L. lactis 1370 and L. spp. V20 reduce plaque
formation, and t. L. lactis 1370 is more effective than L. spp. V20 in plaque reduction.
